It was not perfect then, but much better than today.  At least the IT, financial and energy sectors were booming at that time. Newcomers had no problem locating good paying jobs after taking a few quick courses in IT or accounting. Wages were also rising fast as employers competing for workers, big signing bonuses were handed out to many new hires. As you know, the employment picture is much dimmer today, last year, pretty much all the new jobs were part time, while full time jobs are being lost. And forget about raises and signing bonuses, you are lucky if you can just keep a job.

So 1999? I landed one year earlier.
Here were the unemployment rates of previous two years:
1997: 9.1, 1998: 8.3.
Since then the unemployment rates have never been higher than 8.3.
If your logic holds, then your immigration should have been declined.

Also since 1990s, landed immigrants have been steady (250-300K), and east Asia (China, HK, Taiwan, etc.) has been number one source of immigration to Canada.

Don't get me wrong, I think Canada should have accepted you. However let's not close the door, simply because you are in, let's give the same opportunity to our Chinese brothers and sisters as this country gave to you.
Besides, as an aged country, we need the new blood.

The unemployment numbers don't tell the whole story. The quality of jobs is also important. If you lose a job as senior manager, and then drive Uber part time to make ends meet, that Is not reflected in unemployment number at all. Also, unemployed people who lose hope and no longer look for jobs are not counted in unemployment number. The key responsible of a government is to look after the people who are currently residing in the country, citizens and tax payers should be the government's top priority, not foreigners. You don't give food to neighbors when your own kids are hungry. There is nothing racism about that.

You support your numbers by telling the stats, not by writing long arguments; unless stats are not on your side.
By the way, unemployment rate is one of the most important macro-economic indicators for working-class Canadians, if not the sole indicator.
By fighting the right time of accepting immigrants we miss the bigger point: the force behind this is the alt-right movement, which is not-only anti-immigration but anti-colors.

I don't want to waste more time arguing with you. But anybody lives in Canada can feel that lives are getting harder, good jobs are scarce, wages are stagnant. That's why a large number of expensive Canadian real estate are bought by foreigners, not Canadians. That was not the situation 20 years ago. Labelling people who oppose unrestricted growth of immigration as 'racists' is an old trick from the lefties. But just like you lock your door to protect your family, there is nothing racism about controlling immigration to protect citizens. In a tough economic time like this, more immigration only pull down wages, increase competition for jobs and add pressures to already stressed social programs.

It was waste of time (trying to convince you), but others may see it differently - your points are not supported by evidences.
"You are in, anyone else should be out."
I know you would never admit it, but that's what it is.

So here's the English article. Where did he mention 'white only' immigration? He only says immigrants need to understand Canadian values. But this has nothing to do with race.
