Japan has a lot at stake. An agreement on the islands east of Hokkaido seized by Russia with the eviction of 17,000 Japanese would involve a peace treaty, after the two sides failed to formally close the war in 1945, and pave the way for closer energy ties.

Japan needs Russia in its chess game with China over resource rich island territories that it seems everyone is claiming as their own. It also needs new markets and sources ofresources, and Russia has them.

Actually, the US is Japan's "protector" because the US wrote their constitution which leaves them without a military that can defend them. That is slowly changing. And the US was suppose to be moving its attention to Asia according to Obama's policies - which made Putin able to catch Obama with his back turned to Europe. Where was all the intelligence services that the US spends billions on? What about the eyes in the skies?
