THE CUTS: Cisco Systems Inc. is cutting 6,500 employees - about 9 percent of its work force. About two-thirds are through layoffs, and the rest as part of an early-retirement program.
NOT A SURPRISE: The cuts follow up on a plan announced in May to eliminate thousands of jobs to reduce costs and raise profits. Cisco ( CSCO - news - people ) didn't say then how many jobs would be eliminated.


TOUGH TIMES: The company has been struggling as competition rises from companies such as Juniper Networks Inc. ( JNPR - news - people ) and Hewlett-Packard Co. ( HPQ - news - people ) in the computer networking equipment market.
