Idioms and expressions from driving

1. to put or get something/oneself in gear – to start doing something (as with a car).  He needs a job badly but doesn’t want to look for one.  He’s got to get (himself) in gear.  
[开始运转,开始工作] ——他非常需要一份工作,但是他却不想去找。他必须要让自己开始进入正轨了。

2. to put the brakes on – to stop something.  I’ve been gaining weight lately.  I have to put the brakes on my late night snacking.
[停止,中止]——我最近体重正在增加,看来我该停止在深夜吃零食了。

3. to shift gears – to change the topic or direction.  When people meet for a business lunch, they often engage in small talk at first; then they shift gears and discuss ‘the deal’.
[改变方式(或办法、速度等)]——当人们参加(为谈生意而安排的)商务午餐时,他们大多一开始先是寒暄几句,然后再变为谈论他们的‘买卖’。

4.  to take the wheel or at the wheel – to take control or be in charge.  John was at the wheel when the company started to lose sales.  So a new sales manager was brought in to take the wheel.

5.  a big wheel – a big boss, important person.  He’s a really big wheel at that company.
