　　英語的情態動詞（modal verbs）可以協助主動詞，表達一句話的語氣﹔有時，不同的情態動詞還會多少扭轉一句話的含意。例如“Shall I come in?”和“May I come in?”這兩句話的含意一樣嗎？答案是否定的。
　　用“May”提問，目的在請求對方同意某事，是種客氣方式，意思是：“我想進來，不知你允許嗎？”
　　用“Shall”提問，目的在探聽對方要不要我進來，有點像“Do you want me to come in?”而“你要我進來，我就進來，你不要我進來，我就不進來。”
　　現在再比較下列各組，看看語意有何差別：
(1)　a. Shall I read this book now?
（你現在要我看這本書嗎？）
　　 b. May I read this book now?
（我現在可以看這本書嗎？）
(2)　a. Shall I buy the stamps for you?
（你要我替你買郵票嗎？）
　 b. Can I buy the stamps for you?
（我可以替你買郵票嗎？）
(3)　a. Shall I write the annual report?
（你要我寫年終報告嗎？）
　b. Might/May/Can I write the annual report?（我可以寫年終報告了嗎？）
　　最后，再看看另外兩句的差別何在？
(4)　Our basketball team has gone to Malaysia.
(5)　Our basketball team has been to Malaysia.
　　第4句子里用“gone”﹔5里用“been”。一字不同，意思有別。
　　前句的含義是：這支隊伍現在已不在這兒到馬來西亞去了。后句的意思是：這支隊伍曾經去過馬來西亞，但現在已在這兒。
　　同樣的，第6句和第7句的含義差別也和4及5一樣：
( 6 )　Jade has gone to China.
(7)　Jade has been to China.
　　由此可見，“have gone to”和“have been to”盡管樣貌相似，用的都是現在完成時態，但含意并不相同。
　　通過上述例句的對比，可以知道“今天早上，海倫去看過牙醫了”的英譯句應該是8或9：
( 8 ) 　Helen has been to the dentist.
(9)　Helen went to see the dentist this morning.不能說：
(10)　Helen has gone to the dentist this morning.
　　還有，針對“Where have you been before?”這句問話，正確的答案是11不是12：
(11)　I have been to London.
(12)　I have gone to London.
　　因為人還在說話，怎么可以在倫敦？
　　在結束本文之前，請比較13a和13b，以確定其語意：
(13)　a. The security guard is used to watch the bank.
　　 b. The security guard is used to watching the bank.
　　13a. 是被動句，意思是：“保安人員被用來看守銀行。”主動句是：“Someone uses the security guard to watch the bank.”
　　13b. 是“接系動詞＋used to + 賓語”
（linking verb + used to + object），意思是：
“保安人員習慣于看守銀行。”
其他例子：
(14)　Are you used to living in a cold country?（你習慣住在寒冷國家嗎？）
(15)　 I am quite used to cold weather.
　　 （我相當適應冷天氣。）

　　“頭”是身體上主要的器官，高高在上，因此與“頭”有關的慣用語，雖然不是很多，但不能不懂。
　　(1) Above one's head:不能理解“Can you simplify the technicalities of laser printing which are still above my head?
　　(2) Go off one's head:發瘋“If you expect all your staff to work overtime during a festive season, you must be off your head.”
　　(3) Come to a head: 達到攤牌階段“The couple cannot get along well. If things come to a head, they may be forced to get divorced.
　　(4) From head to toe: 從頭到腳“Mike must have played in the rain, as he was covered with mud from head to toe.
　　(5) Have a head for figures: 數學好“I don't think I can help you with the accounts; I have never had a head for figures.”
　　( 6 ) Have a head start: 起步比人快“As a bilingual, Jason has a head start on other competitors.”
　　(7) Have one's head in the clouds與實際情況脫節“Although Susan is idealistic at times, she has not got her head in the clouds.
　　( 8 )Have one's head screwed on the right way必須理智和清醒“Since he has his head screwed on the right way, he is likely to succeed in the new business.”
　　(9)Head over heels: 完全地﹔徹底地
Bob came across Lily on an overseas trip and fell head over heels in love with her.
　　(10) Keep a cool head:保持冷靜“No matter what you do, it won't be wrong for you to keep a cool head.”
　　(11) Keep one's head above water 避免負債.
　　“In any business, if you can keep your head above water in the first one to two years, you will make money afterwards.”
　　(12) Lose one's head失去控制“Seeing his friend falling into the river, Irene lost her head and shouted for help.”
　　(13) Make no head or tail of.....:對……不知所云“The speaker talked so fast that many could make no head or tail of his lecture.”
　　(14) Put...into someone's head: 向……提供意見 “Nancy has been thinking of working in an underdeveloped foreign country. I don't know who has put such an odd idea into her head.”
　　(15) Use One's head: 動動腦筋:“Don't keep asking people to help solve problems for you！ Use your head, please！”
　　(16) Put our/ your /their heads together: 大家一起商量“In the face of such a problem, let us put our heads together to find a good way out.”
　　(17)Head and shoulders above... 勝過……“This book by Jason is head and shoulders above many other books on the same subject.”
　　(18)Hit the nail on the head: 做得恰到好處﹔說得對極了“The other day, you said that there would be an increase in social issues; you really hit the nail on the head！

　　西諺有：A kindly aver will never make a good horse。其中kindly 相當于natural, aver是work horse。此諺說：天生拉車的馬絕對成不了駿馬。一個人資質欠佳，可用此諺說：He is a kindly aver，或者：He will never make a good horse 。但是天生好馬也需善加訓練（馴服，breaking），正是另一句諺語所說的：The best horse needs breaking and the aptest child needs teaching。最好的馬要馴服，最聰明的孩子要教導。人和馬一樣，要好好教導。我們常以白馬為駿馬，可是西洋迷信認為馬四腳全白者不祥且無能，故有：A four white-foot horse is a horse for a fool, a three white-foot horse is a horse for a king, and if he has but one I'll give him to none。四腳全白的馬給蠢人，三腳白者是帝王之馬，一腳白的是寶貝，絕不送人。我們稱易受人利用的老實人為：A willing horse, 正是諺語說的：All lay loads on a willing horse。愿意幫助人的老實人，大家都把事情推給他去做，讓他一個人去負擔，去work like a horse。
