Activity: Rally for a Safer Community and to End Police Brutality
Date: July 4 th 2020
Day: Saturday
Reminded by what happened to Mona Wang, Richmond society, in compliance to the provincial
guidelines, rally together to echo the world’s demand governments to end police brutality
through thorough and concrete police reform.
What happened to Mona was unacceptable. The force used by the officer was both excessive
and unnecessary, and resulted in degrading emotional and physical traumas. If there weren't
cameras, it will be extremely difficult to fight for justice for Mona.
The footage helped the world to witness the officer’s inconsiderate and degrading treatment of
Mona. The officer first dragged a semi-conscious and unresisting Mona across a long carpeted
hallway. Then while waiting in a public space, the officer did not attempt to cover the
inadequately dressed Mona. Worst of all, with no signs of resistance or movements, the officer
intentionally stepped on Mona’s head.
As we all watched with horror, the pain experienced by Mona transcends gender, age, class and
ethnicity, and impact the community deeply. Such harsh treatment by the police has no place in
today’s modern and civilized society. Therefore, Richmond people are joining the rest of the
world demanding justice for Mona Wang and police reform.
Main points on police reform:
1) ACCOUNTABILITY, it is time for the police to be under the supervision of a locally elected
board.
2) TRANSPARENCY, police officers should be wearing bodycam.
3) PROFESSIONAL LIMITATION, all officers should only be function within their training and
scope. When additional support is needed, police should seek professional support like social
workers and mental health professionals.
We all need a safe community protected by a trustworthy and professional police force. When
the police function without accountability, transparency and respect to professional limitations,
the most vulnerable suffers. It is time for change s what happened to Mona Wang will never
happen again.
