Petition in support of Inky Mark, MP for Dauphin—Swan River—Marquette
PETITION TO THE HOUSE OF COMMONS OF CANADA IN PARLIAMENT ASSEMBLED
WE, THE UNDERSIGNED CITIZENS OF CANADA, draw the attention of the House to the following:
THAT the present Government of Canada has repeatedly asserted itself to be an exemplar of tolerance and the defender of Canadian values of fair play and decency;
THAT all parliamentarians should treat one another with respect, without imputation of inferiority on the basis of race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, citizenship, creed, sex, sexual orientation, age, marital status, family status or disability;
THAT failing such respectful behaviour on the part of parliamentarians, the dignity of Parliament is injured;
THAT failing such respectful behaviour on the part of Ministers of the Crown, the reputation of the Government of Canada shall suffer in this country and abroad;
AND THAT despite these self-evident truths, Reg Alcock, Member of Parliament for Winnipeg South and President of the Treasury Board did, on the 4th day of May, 2005, state to a journalist in a taped interview that "Frankly, if I was going to recruit somebody, I'd go a little higher up the gene pool”, with reference to Inky Mark, a visible minority and Chinese-Canadian Member of Parliament in good standing;
THEREFORE your petitioners request that Reg Alcock, Member of Parliament for Winnipeg South and President of the Treasury Board, take responsibility for his remarks and resign from his Ministerial office forthwith, to preserve the dignity of Parliament of Canada and the reputation of the government of Canada.
