Accused in office stabbings appears in court but we're a long way from answers
TORONTO - Chuang “Ray” Li was no longer smiling that eerie smile. Accused of going on a bloody rampage after being fired from his IT job, the Mississauga man appeared briefly in a Finch Ave. court Thursday. Unlike the previous day’s photos of him in the back of a police cruiser sporting a bizarre grin, the 47-year-old wasn’t looking as pleased with himself as he was remanded in custody. Li faces 11 charges, including three counts of attempted murder in the stabbings of Ceridian’s Dayforce HR manager Rajsri De, vice president of research and development Jimmy Konandreas and implementation director Scott Berenthal. His wife had waited most of the day for his appearance and was seen sobbing in the washroom as the hearing was repeatedly delayed as they waited for a Mandarin interpreter. When he was finally brought in, she saw her bespectacled husband dressed in prison-issue orange pants and his own blue sweatshirt, his left hand wrapped in a white bandage. His alleged victims have fared much, much worse. A publication ban was placed on his appearance but before it was imposed, the Crown indicated that she will be opposing any bail for Li. And then as quickly as he was brought in, he was back in handcuffs and being taken away. His poor wife quickly left the courtroom and was soon running through the parking lot as she tried to evade the media asking all the questions she is probably asking herself: why was her family’s anonymous life suddenly shattered by allegations of such bewildering and sudden violence? Neighbours have called Li kind, friendly, a good father to his teenaged daughter. Police said he had no criminal record, that he wasn’t “known” to them. Were there mental health issues involved? Any danger signs ignored? But then the U.S. experience has shown there is usually little warning for such tragedies. “Going postal” is an American phenomenon — coined originally for the rash of workplace homicides at their post offices. Office violence is not something we are familiar with in Canada; the spectre of someone just snapping under the pressure and retaliating against colleagues is something we expect south of the border, not here. And yet, in these sorry years of firings and layoffs, it’s almost shocking that this hasn’t happened more often. Or as one HR professional tweeted, it “highlights the need for risk-based assessment strategy for terminations.” It was just after 9:30 a.m. on the fifth floor Yonge St. offices of Ceridian’s Dayforce HCM, a human resources technology firm. Toronto Police say an IT employee had just been given his pink slip by two superiors when he attacked them with a sharp instrument, probably a knife. De, 32, was stabbed repeatedly in the abdomen and face and was said to be in critical condition. Her fellow manager was stabbed in the chest and head. When the disgruntled employee then went to leave the office, police said he stabbed a third manager above the eye when confronted by him and then attacked another employee who tried to stop him. It could have been even worse. Police said brave staff at the firm managed to subdue the attacker and hold him for police who were responding to their 911 call. “At this time, our focus remains on the health and well-being of our employees who were injured during the tragic events at our office yesterday,” Ceridian said in a statement released Thursday. “Three employees are recovering in the hospital while a fourth was treated yesterday and released. We appreciate the outpouring of support and well wishes from the community and for your continued respect for the privacy of those involved.” For those whose job it is to let people go, this terrifying incident must give them real pause. Taking away someone’s livelihood — justified or not — can be a dangerous proposition. Now De remains in hospital, recovering from life-threatening injuries. While her alleged attacker spends his second night behind bars, privy to the answers only he knows. Li is slated to appear back in court Friday morning for a bail hearing. |
