BINOY THOMAS
It’s confirmed now that Toronto’s Mayor Rob Ford, did smoke crack cocaine from a glass pipe. Full marks to the investigative team at Toronto Star, they were persistent, fierce, and relentless in going after their marked man with all the fire power they have got. And succeeded in proving that media can still be a powerful tool for good or bad.
Ford himself admitted to it, rather sheepishly after Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair, confirmed the ‘sighting’. How did Ford manage to maintain an allegedly debilitating habit, and yet, be a very effective mayor for the city?
Look at Ford and his well-established work schedule – the man is a human dynamo, runs a business, coaches a football team, is available to the community for whatever events, can even play a cameo role in an opera, never fails to respond to a caller, can even knock at your door, with a pizza in hand (the last is my addition!). If an occasional crack at something is what gives you this much energy and policy clarity, then, I wish more politicians will try the fix. I say that only half in jest, the other half in dead seriousness.
I have heard of rock stars, fuelled my drugs, creating brilliant songs. Can it be true of politicians too! Maybe. We are on the right track in Canada as the Federal Liberal Party leader Justin Trudeau, and according to many, Prime Minister In Waiting, has already admitted to conducting similar experiments!
The entrenched power brokers in Toronto hated Rob Ford from even before he could make it to the Mayor’s chair. Why, you would wonder! Perhaps, he was rotund (which is a description that is used for the architecture of City Hall), perhaps, he didn’t play in the same gaming rooms as George Smitherman, their choice. It’s not as if Smitherman hadn’t puffed at some substance or the other. He was not much lighter than Ford either. But then, Smitherman had made it clear that he was generous with the public funds (eHealthy billion), and will not be fighting too hard on behalf of taxpayers.
Did they fear then, that a Ford victory would have been a real victory for the people of Toronto? Toronto politics had become an elaborate set-up, having been scripted by some giant business interests and the unions. Elections were held routinely, where each candidate mouthed off on their commitment to the poor, and then moved to the city hall and forgot all about the real working people, got into cosy relationships with corporations and unions and proceeded to bend over backwards in finding ways how to shovel more money towards their friends and sponsors. Remember, how ex Mayor David Miller, promised the city workers that they would be the highest paid in the land. Is that even legal for a politician to say, to play at that level of partisanship? But it happens all the time? Not just that, Miller raised the definition of nepotism to new and more astonishing levels, and went on a hiring spree, soldiers, I guess, who can be counted on during the re-election campaign for him and the favoured councillors. But Miller had blonde curls, and a cry-baby delivery, both irresistible to that woman who screeched ‘people are dying on the street’ and and her self-serving ilk.
Rob Ford was perceived as a fly in their ointment – here was a guy who knew what the real working families were going through, struggling from day to day, dealing with the uncertainties of life without life-long job security or gold-plated pensions, and providing food for their children, without large deposits in the bank, and yet paid their taxes and behaved like good citizens. Okay, read that as a huge majority of the immigrants to the city. The people who came in to support Ford were the regular joes, people who form the backbone of any decent society. They realized that it was their city too, and if the city fails, they would be the worst hit.
