Ont. checking if U.S. cash paid for attack on Liberals

TORONTO — The Ontario government is checking to see if American money is being used to pay for television advertisements attacking the McGuinty Liberals.

The Canadian Transit Company is behind the ads that accuse the Liberal government of wasting money on an unnecessary and unwanted new bridge linking Windsor and Detroit.

The company has not returned calls for comment, and its Windsor telephone line is forwarded to its Detroit parent company that owns the Ambassador Bridge joining the two cities.

Finance Minister Dwight Duncan says the Ambassador Bridge is trying to protect its monopoly, and he's investigating to make sure the ads don't violate Ontario's election laws.

Duncan says they company probably protected itself legally but he wants to make sure because -- in his words -- "they are trying to influence an election."

The ads go after Duncan personally for supporting the new bridge, but the finance minister says he doesn't think people on this side of the border will be intimidated by what he calls scare tactics.

哈勃政府和美国政府(比如布什政府)被人在媒体上指责的次数多了去了, 也没见他们给人扣"是不是试图影响选举"的大帽子. 以政府的名义压制不同的声音, 是独裁的倾向.
