Scarborough最早在大约一千年前由Viking(维京)人在英格兰的西北部North
Yorkshire登陆后逐渐成为一个重要的港口。中世纪时期，Scarborough是来自全
英格兰甚至还有欧洲的商人经常聚集的一个海边重镇。Scarborough Fair在历史
上是一个从八月十五日开始延续45天的交易集市。在那个年代持续如此之长的集市
是很少见的。后来这个集市逐渐冷清衰落，现在Scarborough只是一个默默无闻的
小镇了。

作为歌曲，Scarborough Fair原是一首古老(大约作于十三世纪)的苏格兰民间谜歌
(riddle song)。那个年代不像现在有版权的说法，因此歌曲的作者没有能够留下姓
名。这样的谜歌由漂流各地的游唱诗人(bard或shaper)辗转传唱。因此年深月久，
衍化出许多不同的歌词版本。

下面的歌词是比较全的传统版本：

歌曲的主人是一个被情人抛弃的男人。尽管歌词充满诗意和微妙的情调，但在中世
纪时期只能算是民歌，而不可能是贵族的作品。那个年代，贵族和骑士们只能远远
地对一个女人在心里暗暗爱慕，而那样的倾情几乎是不可能得到回响的。

据说其中一个版本的背景来自同时期的Whittington Fair，而不是Scarborough
Fair。其中一个解释是基于歌中她毫无缘由或先兆的离开。那时在Scarborough被
抓获的小偷或嫌疑犯常常在一种街头法庭上被判处或在树上吊死。于是后来
Scarborough warning在英语里就成了“没有先兆”的意思。因此，Scarborough
Fair就蕴涵着歌者对她的离开缘由毫无所知，或者原因过于复杂也就根本不予提及。

歌者给他的心上人安排了不可能完成的事情，意味着有时候爱情需要突破日常生活
中似乎不可能的壁障才有希望。如果她能试图去做那些不可能完成的事情，那么她
只得返回到他的身边向他求救，于是爱情就有希望得到自然的展开和延续。或许就
像常说的那样，every heart grows merry in time.

在第二个诗节(stanza)中出现的欧芹、鼠尾草、迷迭香和百里香(parsley, sage,
rosemary and thyme) 是一个很重要的主题。今天人们对这四种植物没有什么特别
的感觉，但那个时代它们给人的联想就像当今红玫瑰与爱情的关系一样，象征着歌
者对期待着心上人和自己具有的品质，因此她才有可能回到他的身旁。

按照那些相信植物疗法的人的看法，欧芹Parsley (Petroselinum crispum)具有
治疗消化不良的功能。比如，据说吃菠菜的时候如果嚼一片欧芹树叶的话就能让菠
菜的苦味消失，并易于消化。因此在中世纪欧芹被赋予一定的精神寓意的。

鼠尾草Sage (Salvia officinalis)的象征有着数千年的历史，代表着力量。

迷迭香Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)表示忠诚，挚爱和挂念。古希腊时
男人就送给自己的恋人以迷迭香来表达爱慕，今天在欧洲新娘还有在头上别上迷迭
香树枝的习俗。据说迷迭香能让人敏感和谨慎，于是在古罗马当一个人面对精神压
力的时候，大夫常常建议放一小袋迷迭香树叶子于枕头下面。迷迭香有时候用作比
喻女性的爱，尽管有些迟缓，却强劲并持续长久。

在神话传说中的中秋之夜，国王在荒野的百里香Thyme (Thymus vulgaris)丛林
中与神仙们狂舞。但百里香一般象征勇气，在中世纪时骑士的盾牌上就有他的女人
给他绣上的百里香的图像。

于是，垂头丧气的歌者用这四种在中世纪众所周知的植物，期望他的心上人能够用
爱的温柔来消融他们之间的误会和痛苦，用毅力来度过他们分离的艰难时光，用忠
诚来陪伴孤独的日子，用勇气去挑战那些不可能的事情并最终回到他的身旁。

起初这首歌被英国民歌之父Ewan MacColl 选进他编辑的一本介绍英国民歌的书中，
英国民歌手Martin Carthy后来又进行了再创作。1966年底，Paul Simon在英国时
将它改编成反战色彩浓厚的歌曲，并收入他的专辑Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and
Thyme之中，后用作电影The Graduate的中插曲(其中的The Sound of Silence是
另一首广为流传的歌)。 Simon是犹太美国人，在英国剑桥攻读文学专业。他在与
Carthy合作演唱时从Carthy那里学会了这首歌，又把自己写的一首反战歌曲The
Side Of A Hill作为副歌和这首歌混在一起，用对比的手法表达了对和平的渴望。
Art Garfunkel似乎是学数学出身，为副歌作了曲，成为歌中的“颂歌”部分。两人
在录音时利用多轨技术把多个声部叠加在一起，使人声显得特别丰富。据说崔健在
“七合板乐队”时的一张专辑里也曾翻唱过这首歌曲。

1995年莲波在ACT上提供过一个Simon版本的“诗经”格式的汉语译本：

我总觉得它和《诗经》有一种很微妙的契合，纵然一个是公元之前，而另一个是百
世以后。

它的旋律，仿佛是一阵清风，夹杂着野草野花的苦寒轻香，在大地上缓缓掠过后而
我更看见一个穿白衣服的人摇着木铎，边走边呼唤着苍穹，在一望无际的大地与村
怦之间采集梦幻。

真地很难忘却这种莫名的联想。很喜欢在异邦的文明之中，还能寻出这样令我心折
的古中国的意韵。

试着用《诗经》的格式翻了下，填到原曲中，竟也能唱。

刚才天还是淡淡的蓝色，偶尔几团大块的云彩缓缓的移动。可一转眼乌云就从四面八方匆匆赶来，堆满了小镇的天空。敏感的我立即感觉到有细小雨滴打在脸上。

英国的天气，真是比女孩子的心思变化的还快。

是个小小的渔港，沿着海岸依山密密麻麻的堆着小方块般的彩色房子。远远的山脊上有座古旧破落的城堡残痕，大部份建筑毁掉了，只剩下几道城墙仍傲然的看着脚下的港湾。

非常的安静，几乎有点寂寞。

很久很久以前，也许都已经有了1000年那么远，Sacrborough 曾经是英国的交易中心。每年的8月，全英国的商人都会聚集在这里，交换着他们的商品。据说，连欧洲大陆的人也会来凑个热闹，在那中世纪晚期的黑暗时代，这里曾是盛世。

不知过了多少年，交易盛会没落了，人们不再光顾这里。小镇的人任命的继续着他们渔民的生活。又不知过了多少年，连渔港都没落了。现在，这里只是一个小镇，几千人的小海港。

如果不是 Paul Simon 在 “毕业生” 中重新唱了那首美丽的民歌，大概我永远都不会想来看看， Scarborough 到底是什么样子？

那首歌 Scarborough Fair 已经流传了近千年。不知道是谁写的，游唱的诗人们将它保留下来。一个伤心人的故事，在他的爱人不告而别之后，用淳朴的词语告诉她，他会在这里等待，而她终究还会是他的真爱。他一定很浪漫，因为每段歌词中都有Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme的字样，那个年代，这些香草就如同现代人用的红玫瑰一般。

岸边是白色的沙滩，天气还凉，又有些下雨，人就更少了。沿着海边的小路向市区走去，空气来漂泊着些咸咸的海水味道。雨时有时无的，发捎终于被打湿，有些滴滴打打的水珠。

小镇的街巷是依山而建的，每座房子大概都有了些年头。大块的石头拼成不太整齐的墙，只有临街的房子才用些鲜艳的颜色粉刷过。顺着一条街随意的向上走去，房子们一个挨着一个但从高至底整齐的排列着。典型欧洲小城的风格，几乎家家都有阳台，而那刷了黑漆的阳台上又都挂着些开满草花的花蓝。在雨里，那些花漫不经心的开着。

转条街，便是个小小的咖啡店，面颊带着红色愈显得淳朴的老板娘走过来，浓重的英国中部口音，要喝什么吗？

正是下午茶的时候，一杯浓浓的红茶加一块酥饼简直让人不舍得离去。

并不敢久坐，雨下得更大了，有些担心眼睛上的睫毛油会化开。忍不住停下脚步在路边的橱窗玻璃上照了一眼。偏巧，是个小杂货铺子，卖些水果，牛奶报纸之类的东西，而另外一个同样脸上带着红润的老板娘正从里面向外看出来。不好意思的笑了笑，干脆推门走了进去。

没什么想买的，随手翻着些明信片然后问她，有没有邮票呢？老板娘连忙说有，而且你可以把明信片留下我帮你寄出去。很多游客都这样做。

原来我怎么看起来都还是游客的。

挑了几张，忽然想起来，又问她，那寄回美国要多少钱的邮票呢？

老板娘愣了，随即又笑了，对不起，我不知道，没有人这样寄过。这里的游客多半是附近的人。

还是挑了几张，有一张海滩的照片，满满的都是游泳的人。这里，如果天气好，日子也不会全是那么冷清的。

再转过街，就更冷清了，大石头铺的路被雨水淋得有些发亮。看到一条楼梯陡陡的可以下去正街，于是小心翼翼的走了下去。

正街是在海湾的中心，正面对沙滩的那一带。每座房子都是店面，刷着夸张的颜色。很多纪念品店，卖着廉价的旅游商品。还有些 Fish & Chips 的店，一层油的柜台后门年轻的店员大声的招揽着零零散散的游人。买一份回来，边走边吃着，裹了面炸过的 Cod fish 很新鲜，而 Chips 原来就是薯条。

有家戏院，大概在放些大城市早就放过了的电影，几个老年人站在售票亭子边聊着天。有几家游戏厅，霓虹灯闪着，却没什么人进去。店员站在门口看着对面的海，无聊的抽着烟。

天是灰色的，海也是灰色的。白色的沙滩因为潮湿变成一种脏脏的深咖啡。沙子很软，踩在上面无声无息的。远远的有几艘渔船靠在港边。

雨下着下着就停了，远处天空的乌云层里透出了阳光，几只海鸥在海边不远的上空飞翔，偶尔惊鸣几声。我仍然漫无目的的走着，走在一个看不到曾经的辉煌，只有落寂的小渔港，耳边一直有那首歌在哼唱：

Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Remember me to one who lives there
For once she was a true love of mine
