hard to compare
i am afraid that the author is comparing the education in toronto public school with china's.
from the form: canada's is better.
from the text book content compilation: canada's is better.
from the acceptability to children, canada's is better.
from the content updates, canada's is better.
from the depth of the contents, china's is better.
this is what i understand from TDSB's.
what i understand from gifted program in toronto: i saw an article written by a chinese gifted child (Cummer Valley) which was praised as the best quoted article in the school. i really don't think it is that good: from the wording, structure, etc.. however i understand that there are more assignement/ projects to do in gifted program in TDSB than those in public schools under normal education program.
this is what i understand from gifted program in TDSB system, just a rough idea.
about the private school in toronto: my child is studying in UTS which is a private school providing gifted education program. i saw a 1st. prize essay in commonwealth countries essay competition, it was written by a chinese boy in grade 10, i have to say, it is perfect. so if you compare private school's gifted program with china's:
from the form: canada's is better.
from the text book content compilation: canada's is better.
from the acceptability to children, canada's is better.
from the content updates, canada's is better.
from the depth of the contents, canada's is better(they normally study grade 10 courses in grade 9, ...in grade 12, they study university's and prepare for the univ. enrolment. the school will provide career and univ. introduction seminar in grade 10 so that the student can select courses relative to they future career).
but really chinese children are very smart, chinese parents are more taking care of their kids' education ( just assignment /projects / exercises provided by TDSB schools are not sufficient). many HK'nese parents here send their children(even gifted) to weekend programs(math, science).
there is one thing for sure (agreed with the author):
if you send back your child to china, they will definitely lose to chinese students as chinese eductaion system provides more written exercises and your kids don't like it anymore.
we all come from chinese education system, i dont' see any big problems to adapt to the canadian industry. the key is: you need to keep learning, adapting to the changes. |
