Mistake 1) Do not say “You have made false and defamatory statement…”, but say “You have made a false and defamatory statement…” or “You have made false and defamatory statements…” This mistake is typical of Chinese immigrants whose native language does not differentiate between abstract ideas and concrete countable entities.
Misake 2) Instead of “…we found you website carried…”, should say “…we found your website carried…” This is a simple and careless mistake.
Mistake 3), 4) Instead of ‘…a statement titled “What is Chinese purpose by misleading the public”’, should say “…a statement titled “What is Chinese News’ Motive in Misleading the Public”’. Note the title case (capitalization of the first letter of substantive words) in the title. The original mistakenly left out the word “News”. The word “purpose” is OK, but “motive” more accurately captures the essence of the meaning.
Mistake 5), 6) Instead of “The statement is not based in fact”, should say “The statement is not based on facts”. Use “on”, not “in”; and use “facts”, not “fact”.
Mistake 7), 8), 9) Instead of “…it is no defence to simply allege another party of “misleading”, should say “…it is not a good rebuttal to simply allege that the other party ‘misled’ the public”. The part “it is no defence…” sounds awkward. The structure after the verb “allege” is wrong. “misleading” should not stand alone; it should be followed by “the public”.
Mistake 10) 11) Instead of “…the statement posted in www.51.ca...”, should say “…the statement posted on www.51.ca...”. This mistake happens in two places in the same paragraph.
Mistake 12) Instead of “We look forward to hear from you”, should say “We look forward to hearing from you.” Use “hearing” not “hear” after “look forward to”.
这位朋友的英文真好,我也发现介词的使用一直我们华人易犯的一个错误,原因就在于很多都是习惯用法,需要记忆。
