Computer programming can have so many areas, which field are you in? If you were doing Mainframe or AS/400 or VMS then you can forget what you had known before and go back to Uni or College to learn client/server, Internet programming then start over again.

I know a lot of Mainframe guys from China, they were good programmers, developers, system programmers before, but here, the companies just want more senior guys, for example, you need to know Mainframe's DB2, PL/1 and Oracle, Java and etc.  There are simply not such a people, esp. from China.

Also when you came here, probably you are very good among the people around you, but that was in China, you have to compete with Romanian, Russian, Indian, Pakistian, Filipino... here.  Their language background may be better than you, and they also have good technical skills!

From the people I know, if you came to Canada before June 2000, then most likely you would be able to find a job (could be laid off already by now), if you came to Canada after that, then 7 months, or more is very common.

So, if you still want to find a IT job, then you can:

a. refine your resume, make up some good experiences.
b. go grab a certificate, such as MCSD, or OCP (assume you are a developer)
c. go back to Uni or College to learn up-to-date technology.
d. go back to China to find a IT job.

Or, if you have lot of reserve, then don't worry too much, start enjoying the terrific summer in Canada!!
