Martin Jacques was editor of the CPGB's journal, Marxism Today from 1977 until its closure in 1991。

A short-sighted thinker with a delusion of being profound. The battle between monarchy and republic has been going on in many forms for centuries. The actual history of China has been an oscillation between centralized power and dissolution into regions - much like the Middle Eastern Islamic world. It is not for the advocates of freedom of thought and information, of capitalism and competition to trim our sails to an elderly form of benevolent despotism but rather to focus on doing what we do well - free flow of information, free flow of unregulated capitalism, free enterprise, freedom of conscience, individual empowerment and responsibility - and win over the course of the decades by the dynamism unleashed by the power of free minds.

We are not Ignorant Roland you stupid ***! People understand what is happening and many people dislike the ruling government. If you'd visited a large Chinese city and actually spoke Chinese you'd know this. People trash the government all the time and they know how corrupt it is. The audacity that you could think the Chinese people that didn't make it to america are just a bunch of ignorant rice picking hicks is ridiculous. The biggest problem doesn't come from knowing, its what are you gonna do about it? Are you willing to give up your life and the lives of your family for the hope that somewhere down the line things will be better for someone else? Because if you are then you should move to china. We need as many martyrs as we can get.

Why does it always become China vs West? It is actually Authoritarian regime vs Democratic regimes, and west had its fair share of authoritarian regimes till few decades back and they also tried to control thought processes of their citizens. Miracle of China is that an authoritarian regime is surviving - infact doing quite well - in this age and time.
Credit for this goes to West - US in particular - which has kept its commercial interests above any humanitarian values. Google has taken courage to reverse that. May God bless Google.

My wife is Chinese, and I have visited China. The truth is many people in China are ignorant about their own country. The government's tight control of information ensures this.
Many Chinese are unaware of the injustices perpetrated against them. Imagine if many Chinese were to learn: that 700,000 of them are dying each year from air pollution; that the melamine milk contaimination was known by the government long before the scandal broke and hundreds of thousands of babies became needlessly ill; that there are secret prisions; etc. Already, there are thousands of protests against the Chinese government each year -- ranging from people in small villages whose land is stripped away to minorties like the Uhigars who are systematically discriminated against. If information flowed freely, there would be tens of thousands of more protests. This is why the Chinese government tightly controls information and seeks to lull its population into false optimism based on ignorance.
However, the Chinese people are not stupid, and some -- especially those who are highly educated -- are becoming disillusioned with their government. During my studies at some of America's top universities, I have met many thoughtful Chinese studying in the USA who are very angry at their government. These people are returning home to China to run your businesses, universities, etc. Sooner or later, your government will be held accountable.

The problem with this article is that first the author wrote for he Marxist Today, the very same ideology that in China tried to destroy the values that he praises now - Confucianism. Its like Bernie goes on vacation. Lets roll up Bernie when we need him.
The problem with the Confucianism argument its like saying the success of the West was based on Christianity. Few people below 60 in China have read the works of Confucius, just as few people below forty in most Western societies have really studied the bible. Confucius is a lingering presence in China, but I would not call China a Confucian nation just as I would not call Sweden a Christian one..
If that was the case, Taiwan would be a model, because its the only Chinese majority state that actually teaches Confucian thought in all schools.
Lastly its really funny that a former Writer of Marxist Today, will be so gung ho on a cultural detriments of economic progress. II guess Marxism has involved over the years.

Additionally, I must address your claims that the Chinese government enjoys a remarkable legitimacy amongst its people. I hope that you understand that this is precisely because the government suppresses information. Most Chinese do not know that 700,000 of them die annually due to air pollution. The report with that statistic is band in China [1]. Most Chinese are unaware that their government knew about the melamine milk contamination before the 2008 Beijing Olympics yet waited several months to act because they did not want the negative press during the Olympics [2]. As a result, hundreds of thousands of babies became ill, and dozens died. Indeed, I was struck by the utter lack of negative news about China when I was in China. This is in a stark contrast to America, where journalists almost take glee in reporting America???s problems [3]. There is a reason why the Chinese government is so paranoid when it comes to the free-flow of information. Already, there are thousands of protests in the country each year. If the Chinese were more informed about their own country's problems, there would be tens of thousands of more protests. Thus, the government tries to cajole its citizens into submission by censoring information, extolling the greatness of China, and fostering rampant nationalism.

Being a Canadian citizen who has lived in America for more than 10 years and having just recently married a Chinese citizen and visited China, I think that I can intelligently comment on your article. Many of your assertions about China's economy overtaking America's are based on questionable assumptions.
Firstly, there is your argument that China's economy is destined to be larger than America's because China currently has 4 times the population. This does not take into account that America's population is growing at a faster rate. By 2100, some experts predict that China's population will be about 1.2 billon [1] whereas America's will be 1 billion [2]. Regardless of reliability of these forecasts, it is clear that the gap in the sizes of China's and America's populations will narrow, given China???s continued one child policy and America???s strong population growth rate.
Secondly, you ignore China's pending demographic nightmare. One of the consequences of China's one child policy is that its population is aging far more rapidly than America's. The many only children will one day be forced to support their parents, grandparents, etc. By 2030, it is projected that nearly 340 million Chinese will be over the age of 60 [3]. The swelling ranks of the elderly and concomitant decrease in the size of the workforce could severely hinder the Chinese economy.
Thirdly, China also faces a health crisis. It is bad enough that China's population is rapidly aging, for this alone will lead to a greater incidence of disease. However, the overall health of the populace faces an even greater threat: rampant pollution. In 2007 alone, it is estimated that 700,000 Chinese died from air pollution [4]. Due to high levels of mutagenic compounds in the air, water, and soil, many more Chinese are now being born with deformities [5]. Sadly, the worst is yet to come, for the long-term health effects of many of the pollutants will only manifest themselves decades from now. Cancer rates will soar, hereto rare genetic disorders will become all-too-common, and medical costs will balloon. Moreover, the disappearing social safety net will leave hundreds of millions without health insurance. Many families are going to be driven into massive debt as they scramble to cover their health costs.
