I don't think this is strange at all. At a matter of fact, when I travel to China, I often see a few young Americans stopped at the border because they don't have a visa. The reason is simple, they don't know they need a visa to travel to China. They think they can just grab the passport and go, just like when they travel to Canada, Europe and most other countries. Those people are usually granted temporary vistor visa at the border and allowed in. This is a very common thing. But whoever wrote this post certainly want to give people a very different impression: Look, China is now the heaven on earth, even Americans want to risk their lives to sneak in.
