The Vancouver Academy of Music is a non-profit institution founded in 1969 by the Community Arts Council of Vancouver. The Academy is permanently housed in a modern facility at Vanier Park near the city centre. This building provides classroom space, a library, teaching studios, the Koerner Recital Hall and rehearsal rooms for orchestra, choir, and ballet. The instructional program offers a wide range of classical training for students of instrumental and vocal music and ballet. In addition to private lessons and class instruction, students participate in master classes, technique classes, opera workshops, and public recitals of solo and ensemble music. Students of orchestral instruments perform in public concerts three times each year in the full Academy Symphony Orchestra under the direction of notable guest conductors. The Academy Orchestra performs in the 2800-seat Orpheum Theatre, home of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.

From its inception, the Academy has had one fundamental purpose: to improve substantially the quality of music training in Western Canada. Central to the curriculum and constant at all stages of study are private instruction and public performance. Accordingly, the Academy has recruited faculty members with strong professional backgrounds, people who are devoted to the instruction of new generations of performers, teachers, composers, and audiences.

It is fortunate that the Academy of Music is located in Vancouver, an active cultural center that appreciates young talent and responds to it enthusiastically. The City of Vancouver boasts one of Canada’s most outstanding symphony orchestras, and many members of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra teach at the Academy.

The Academy of Music, in collaboration with the Thompson Rivers University—Open Learning (TRU-OL), provides a program leading to a Bachelor of Music degree through the TRU-OL. Although the program is designed essentially for the student interested primarily in preparing for a professional career in performance, the curriculum presents a balance of practical and academic studies.
