2011年自由党国会议员候选人中的白人至上主义者, Andre Forbes
OTTAWA — The Liberals moved swiftly today to douse a controversy that threatened a key campaign message, turfing a Quebec candidate for past derogatory comments about natives, Muslims and gays.
Leader Michael Ignatieff announced that Andre Forbes has been booted as the candidate in Manicouagan.
He took the action after the NDP revealed Forbes was a founder of the Association for the Rights of Whites and has a long history of controversial statements, including calling natives "featherheads."
The issue threatened Ignatieff's main message to Quebec voters -- that they must vote Liberal to end the divisive style of Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
"Mr. Forbes' comments have no place within the Liberal Party of Canada," Ignatieff said in a news release. "We categorically condemn any comments that seek to divide Canadians on the basis of their culture or ethnicity."
Forbes is also a member of Metis Cote-Nord, a group that has denounced "special treatment" for minorities.
A letter from the group published in January 2009 -- with Forbes as the contact person -- asks: "If our Metis community was made of Muslims, homosexuals or of an association of old ladies making moccasins out of caribou skin, would Hydro-Quebec consult with us? Yes."
