Dear Friends,
I hope that all of us should support Ford to build Subway! Why? :
The subway is the only way to solve the traffic jam in Toronto in my opinion. I cannot understand that some councillors in the city hall like have LRTs. Why? I not only support mayor Ford to build subway line in the Sheppard line, but also any subways around/in the city in the future. My major is also engineering, and I am responsible one of Torontonian. The reasons that I support to build subways are as following:
First, Subway is the best way to our transportation in Metropolitan Toronto. We have to do some things that are good for our next generation, for our children. Most big cities around the world, New York city, Beijing, Shanghai, and so on, have subways to solve the communicate in their cities. There would have been worse about traffic if the subway were not build in Beijing. As population in Toronto is growing up, the traffic is key problem for us. But the LRTs on the ground will occupy the vehicle tranffic line(lane)s. LRTs will make much more traffic jam. Much more survey should be done around the world, and find the best solution for our future transportation system in Toronto. So the subway must be build in Toronto.
Secondly, Subway is much more good our environment and city than LRTs. As our MMP, did you go through the St. Clair Ave. Which LRTs was build on? It looks ugly. It dose? How width is the street for the cars? Did you visit the residents beside both sides of street? What did they say about the LRTs? The LRTs makes much more noise than subway. There is also potential cost for the residents healthy who live beside the street with LRTs on it.
Thirdly, Having Subway is much more cheaper than operate LRTs. Transportation around city is engineering system rather than a construction event. Building subway is much more expensive than building LRTs at the present, but it is much more cheaper than LRTs in the whole picture in the future. For example, subway is much more efficient to delivery the peoples, it run fast. This can release the traffic jam. It is much more convenient for peoples to wait at the platforms underground than LRTs on the ground because it has a long winter time in Toronto. The person cross the vehicle lane to get the LRTs is dangerous for them to catch the train hurriedly in the morning and at the traffic peak time. The traffic light control will delay the car on the street, and will make the traffic get worse. Besides, the maintenance and operation of LRTs are also much more cost than subways. Additional, there is potential lost that we should consider. For example, it costs about 0.1 billion everyday in Toronto because of traffic jam. The LRTs can improve about 50% about traffic, and we still lost 50 million everyday, and the subway can improve about 75% about traffic, and subway can save more than 25 million everyday than LRTS. So the subway is much more efficient and cheaper than LRTs as transportation engineering system.
Fourth, we can collect the money to build the subway. First, the properties tax should be increased a little bit. I believe that most Torontonian agree with this because they will make their children live better, and they do not want them and their children to spend more than half-hour on the road because the traffic jam. Next the federal and provincial governments have to support Toronto to build the new subway. Torontonain have had paid much more Tax to them every year. The Toronto municipality may issue special bonds for building the subway. I hope that some investors are eager to buy their government bonds. Of course, The city hall should make a contract through public bidding to building subway. This can be done by way of international competitive bidding (ICB). Finally, I hope that the subway can operate in two to three years. For example, subways in Guangzhou, and Shanghai were build in about two to three years. Maybe some privates are also interested in investing the subway. So the city hall could have enough money to build the subway.
In sum, building the subway is the best way to Torontonian without any traffic jams. There are more advertisements to building subway than LRTs based on the above statement. In the future, the more subways should be build around the city, like Beijing, there are inner circle subway lines and out circle subway lines. In the future, for example in 2020, the population in Toronto will be increased to about 10 million, Torontonian will not regret to that we should build subway, not the LRTs, in 2012. |
