Sample 4 ---- Choosing employees by job interviews  (Band 8)

Most employers do job interviews before offering position to a person. Do you think this is the best way to do it, or are there any alternatives? What is the best method of choosing employees in your opinion?

It is a common practice all over the world for employers to interview potential candidates. While I dont think that this is the best way to assess the job worthiness of a particular candidate, I cannot suggest any better alternatives. In my opinion, combining the interview with mock practical tests and written examination is the best way to find suitable candidates.

Interviews are certainly useful in many ways, starting with the fact that numerous employers find interviews helpful as they can assess the personality of a candidate to a great extent.  Moreover, interviewers can utilize various techniques to figure out how a particular person behave in various situations. Other than the aspects above, interviews are especially beneficial for selecting candidates whose jobs require them to interact a lot with clients and customers. For example, people work in sales, marketing, PR or HR need excellent communication skill that can be measured during an interview.

Perhaps the biggest downside of an interview is that it is not reliable when candidates donot demenstrate their true nature or work ethics during an interview. In addition, another disadvantage of interviews is that interviewers cannot measure a candidates technical skills, even though they can assess his general knowledge. To be precise, by simply interviewing someone who has a degree in engineering, an employer cannot find out whether the candidate has skills required to deliver a good performance at workplace. In such situations putting the candidate through tasks they typically would have to do before offering them a job is a better solution.

To conclude, while it is not the best method of choosing a candidate, there arent many better alternatives. In my opinion, employers should combine the interviews with written test and mock practical tests to find the most suitable employees.
