I don't want to get your hopes up. landlords typically cannot collect any monies owed. Because landlord don't have any collateral from tenant to mitigate potential losses. I guess you want to do something is not only for the money but also for justice. Unfortunately, the more you do, the more you lose. go to court/board you need to pay the filling fees, lawyer fees, and the time, aggravation ... and it still not guarantee that you will eventually get your rent money back.
You may have to treat it as a business loss, an expensive lesson.
