Dr. Limon wanted to remain anonymous. Early in mid January, Yan Li Meng, who was doing research in Hongkong, had heard rumors that a dangerous new virus appeared in Chinese mainland, and the government was trying to weaken it. Worried about her personal safety and career, she offered to help her favorite Chinese language YouTube host, who is known for criticizing the Chinese government.

Overnight, Yan limeng became a right-wing media sensation. President Trump's senior advisers and conservative authorities praised her as a hero. Just as quickly, social media labeled her interviews as "false information," and scientists refused to accept her research, saying it was sophistry disguised in jargon.

Yan limeng's evolution from a researcher to a Whistler is the result of the cooperation of two unrelated but increasingly united groups spreading false information: one is a small but active overseas Chinese group, the other is a highly influential far right group in the United States.
