Facing a vote next week that could tank his tenure at Western University, president Amit Chakma pleaded for a second chance Friday from faculty and students in the senate who may hold his fate in their hands.
He did so walking into a lion’s den of a senate meeting in which faculty members doubted his leadership and observers stood and turned their backs on him.
“Please help me. This is a cry out for help,” Chakma said after rebukes from faculty and a student leader as nearly 400 faculty, staff and students watched the dramatic proceedings unfold.
Chakma’s tone reveals how precarious his position may be, said Richard Leblanc, a Toronto lawyer who advises boards and teaches at York and Harvard universities. “It smacks of desperation,” he said. “The board of governors can’t ignore a non-confidence vote in the senate.”
