Columbia College student only here 10 days before death
A 16-year-old Columbia International College student has died after being hit by a van Friday evening at Upper James and Duff streets.
Peng Kangshun had only been at the Hamilton school 10 days before he was killed.
“It’s a really sad day for the entire school community. Certainly our hearts and our prayers go out to the families and everyone involved,” said principal Ron Rambarran.
“It’s never easy … when things like this happen, it’s devastating every time. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.”
Kangshun had come to Hamilton from China to improve his English before applying to Canadian universities. He arrived at the school Oct. 16.
The boy’s family, in Eastern China, is at least 17 hours away. He has no family in Canada, as far as Rambarran knows.
Staff at the school described the boy as “a persistent and fast learner” and a “very industrious student with a strong desire to learn.”
Police say the teenager was crossing Upper James at Duff around 6:30 p.m. when he was struck by a southbound commercial van at the intersection.
A 62-year-old man from Caledonia was driving the van.
Police say poor weather and road conditions were factors in the crash, and their collision reconstruction team is continuing to investigate.
Witnesses are asked to contact Detective Constable Walter Niblock or Detective Constable Matt Hewko at 905-546-4753.
Principal Rambarran said the college has counsellors prepared for grieving staff and students, but noted that because this occurred on a weekend, many students may not yet be aware.
The college has now lost two students to traffic fatalities in a little more than a year.
Jiao Shi Qi, 20, was struck and killed by a drunk driver while crossing Main Street East near Catharine Street last September. In that incident, St. Catharines resident Angelo Epifani, 62, pleaded guilty earlier this ywear to impaired driving causing death.
