Pickering woman charged after fatal 401 crash

Rescue workers access the scene of a fatal crash on eastbound Hwy. 401 on Saturday in which a man in his 30s was killed. Police said a woman was seriously injured and their three children suffered minor injuries.

Provincial police have charged a Pickering woman with dangerous driving causing death after a 34-year-old Brampton man was killed Saturday in a collision on Hwy. 401.

A woman, believed to be the Brampton man’s wife, was taken to the trauma centre at Sunnybrook Hospital with serious leg injuries. She remains in critical condition. Three children, aged 2, 3 and 5, were taken to another hospital for observation.

The children had no obvious injuries beyond cuts and scrapes, according to Toronto EMS. They were wearing seat belts.

The family was riding in a GMC Envoy that collided with a Mazda 6 while travelling eastbound near Port Union Rd. Police said the driver of the Mazda lost control of the car after a lane change. Police believe the driver had attempted to use the transfer lane to move from the collector to the express lane and then changed her mind, colliding with the Envoy.

The Envoy rolled several times and flipped over the cement guardrail into the express lanes.

Alicia Anandjit, 22, is charged with dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing bodily harm. Anandjit made her first court appearance Sunday.
