Open letter to Minister Aglukkaq re: H1N1

Dear Minister Aglukkaq:

I am writing on behalf of the Liberal caucus to express my growing concern over your silence on the federal government’s preparedness for the spread of the H1N1 flu virus across Canada.

To date, there have been nearly 10,000 confirmed cases of H1N1 in Canada, resulting in 39 deaths. The medical community agrees that this is a serious public health issue and we need to be ready for a severe escalation within the next few months.

Despite this threat, I do not see clear public leadership from you to ensure that all Canadians have the necessary information and resources to protect themselves against the spread of H1N1. In my meetings with health officials from across the country over the course of the past several weeks, the message has been the same: the federal government is invisible on this urgent issue.

Canadians are anxious for more than hollow assurances from their government that everything possible is being done to protect them. They need greater clarity around what plans, if any, Health Canada has for managing this escalating public health issue - what is working well, what have we learned and improved, and an honest assessment of where challenges still exist.

As such, the Liberal caucus hereby requests the following:

• A nation-wide public awareness campaign by the Public Health Agency of Canada - one that goes beyond the information simply posted on the department’s website - that provides the very latest information about the virus, what Canada is doing in response and what steps Canadians can take to protect themselves;

• Allow Canada’s Chief Public Officer of Health, Dr. David Butler Jones, to speak regularly and directly to Canadians without political interference;

• The exact number of H1N1 vaccines that have been ordered in preparation for a potential fall outbreak, showing how it compares with the number of priority Canadians your department has identified as requiring the vaccine, and a plan to get those vaccines administered;

• A sufficient number of the special ventilators required to treat individuals in all regions of Canada who are hospitalized due to H1N1, and the plan for sufficient health providers to help across provincial and territorial boundaries;

• Hand sanitizers for all households in Aboriginal communities that lack running water, to be provided immediately; and

• A working group within the Health Department to actively identify communities that are least prepared to deal with an H1N1 outbreak, and then work alongside community leaders to assist them in preparations.

Given the urgency of this situation, your immediate response on these matters is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your reply.

Sincerely,

Dr. Carolyn Bennett

Liberal Health Critic
Member of Parliament for St. Paul’s
