In Canadian big cities, everyone speaks English with an accent. The Ontario accent is the same as that of NE American accent. People from the East coast and Quebec and even Alberta speak English with an accent different from ours. People from the islands speak different accents that it is easy to assess where they are from.
My boss is from England. Besides his accent, his choice of vocabulary is different. For example, we say give me a ring, he says give me a bell. We say continue, he says crack on. We say discuss, he says unpick. He is able to communicate himself very well though.
Chinese immigrants, in addition to the accent, don't "speak" English. We have limited vocabulary, don't know how to express our feelings, and even can't tell the differences amongst can, shall, will, may, should, and etc.
We were raised to speak with an accent. No matter what we do we can't eliminate our accent. Just like my boss whose English is his first language, he can never eliminate his Midland accent: yes, Midland but not London accent. |
