Idioms and expressions using belts and buttons
这周的成语跟“Belts和Buttons”有关。

1.  to tighten one’s belt – to practice thrift, to make do with less.  When he lost his job, all his family members had to tighten their belts.
[勒紧腰带过日子,节俭度日]——当他丢了工作,他的家人不得不勒紧腰带过日子。

2.   to belt something/someone – to hit something/someone very hard.  The baseball player really belted the ball.  Even if you’re angry, don’t belt anyone.  In Canada, it’s illegal.
[用力打某人或某物]——棒球运动员狠狠地击球。即使你非常生气,也不能打人。在加拿大,这是非法的。

3.  to have/need a belt – to have a large (stiff) drink.  The man was so depressed that he felt he needed a belt to feel better.

4.  as cute as a button – very cute.  He always says his girlfriend is as cute as a button.
[非常可爱]——他老是说他的女朋友非常可爱。

5.  on the button – exactly.  It’s nine o’clock on the button.
