The contributions of Chinese Canadians in the fight against the pandemic and the fight against real racism

The Prime Minister’s misleading statement attacking me for racism is, in my opinion, an attempt to deflect from his government’s late response to the COVID-19 crisis.

His cynical attacks on me have been simultaneously causing division within the Chinese-Canadian community and causing race-related tensions in Canada. The Prime Minister needs to stop blaming other people for his own errors. There is a real fear in the Chinese-Canadian community that they will be made more vulnerable to racist attacks by the divisiveness that Prime Minister Trudeau has shown in not admitting his failures in handling COVID-19.

The Chinese-Canadian community set a good example for Canada during the early weeks of the COVID-19 outbreak. They constantly presented suggestions to different levels of governments about the outbreak. They showed that they cared about the potential effects of COVID-19 on their communities earlier than did the federal government. They have done a much better job in pandemic prevention than Dr. Theresa Tam. They set up self-help groups across the nation by the end of January to assist Chinese persons traveling back to Canada who voluntarily self-isolated.

Chinese-Canadians also raised awareness more broadly, helping all Canadians to pay attention to the pandemic, and they shared tips on self-help and self-isolation. Their help also included donations of masks, gloves, other PPE, etc.

When the Liberal government had still done little in terms of preventative measures, the Chinese-Canadian community was already alert to the problems that COVID-19 was causing Canada. It is time that the Prime Minister fire Dr. Tam and admit that he should have listened to the broader Chinese-Canadian community in Canada.

I am very appreciative of the strong support I am receiving from Chinese-Canadians in my fight for public health and free speech in Canada. I am committed to fighting real racism against Chinese-Canadians and every other ethnic group. Prime Minister Trudeau should do the same.
