香港（法新社）-美国海军派出一艘航母迎接由四艘军舰组成的中国舰队——并说美方希望能接到回访邀请。中国将派出4名代表乘坐C2灰狗运输机飞抵乔治华盛顿号作为贵宾进行“参观”，在其周一离开香港之前进过一次例行通话。此时中国南海和中国东海形势高度紧张，北京声称对岛礁和岛屿的主权要求，同时也被美国盟友如日本和菲律宾主张所有。但海军少将航母舰队指挥官马克C. 蒙哥马利，说美—中的军事关系在过去的六个月有了“适度改善”。中国上周证实将首次参加由美国海军月底举办的环太平洋多国海上演习。5月，在中国国防部长在东南亚高度紧张时刻参观了美国军舰。尽管香港于1997年回归中国，但它将还会以东道主身份欢迎美国军舰拜访。可以说解放军驻香港部队对周日途经离港南200公里航行的乔治华盛顿进行过访问。蒙哥马利说，它希望得到北京的回访邀请，参观中国第一艘航母——辽宁号。“我认为，致力加强广泛双边合作的透明度，我认为我们的访问（请求）是恰当的，”他对参访航母的法新社等媒体说。客人们被邀请现场参观航母舰载F/A-18超级大黄蜂战斗机起飞以及降落。但蒙哥马利拒绝评论美国是否决定派遣一个航母编队前往海湾地区处理恶化伊拉克局势。之后他呼吁中国应以外交手段来解决中国南海领土问题。“美国海军的主要作用是起到一个稳定的力量，表明我们对该地区各方的承诺”他说。
