项目五背景：Heavy alcohol consumption during pregnancy is a known a risk factor for adverse perinatal outcomes, such as low weight. There is some debate, however, about the effect of moderate drinking; as well, the mediating influences of cigarette smoking and social class are not fully understood.
Subjects for this survey were selected from pregnant mothers. The information was obtained on drinking history through questionnaires. Alcohol consumption during pregnancy was further obtained. From the initial interview group of 1122 respondents, 900 gave birth to a single fetus after at least 28 weeks of gestation: 85 % of these women completed the questionnaire.
The purpose of this study was to address the relationship between maternal alcohol consumption and the risk of delivering a low weight infant while accounting for smoking status and social status.
