An 11-year-old English girl has caught a 9-foot, 193-pound monster on the Ebro River in northeast Spain.
Jessica Wanstall, of Sittingbourne, Kent, waged a 20-minute battle with the watery behemoth before landing it on the river bank with the help of her father. Compared with the fish, the 4-foot-10-inch girl tips the scales at less than 84 pounds.
According to the International Game Fish Association, Jessica has set a world record for a freshwater fish caught by an angler 16 or younger. The previous record was a 120-pound Nile perch caught in Uganda in 2000.
Bigger catfish than Jessica’s have been caught by older anglers, but that doesn’t take away from her fish story. She and her father returned her prize to the river — after taking a picture of her monumental catch, of course.
