贫困者日增 英国伦敦建筑周围纷纷建造尖形物防流浪者逗留

“It is a scandal that anyone should sleep on thestreets in 21st century Britain. Yet over the last three years rough sleepinghas risen steeply across the country and by a massive 75% in London. Behindthese numbers are real people struggling with a lack of housing, cuts tobenefits and cuts to homelessness services to help them rebuild their lives,” said Katharine Sacks-Jones, head of policy andcampaigns at Crisis, the UK's national charity for homeless people

Austerity, Health, Human rights, Scandal,UK After photos of metal spikes designed to prevent homeless people fromsleeping in posh London neighborhoods surfaced online, people have been ventingtheir outrage with controversial invention all over the social media.Homelessnessrife in UK: Research shows millions are paycheck away from losing home
Photographs of metal studs on the doorsteps of a luxury flat building onSouthwark Bridge Road in central London spurred an “anti-homeless spikes”hashtag campaign by Ethical Pioneer Twitter page.

An anonymous resident of the residential complex told the Telegraph, that “therewas a homeless man asleep there about six weeks ago. ‘Then about two weeks agoall of a sudden studs were put up outside. I presume it is to deter homelesspeople from sleeping there.” However, London resident Nathan FitzPatrick tweeted after talking tolocals outside the building that only one person could confirm homeless weresleeping there – and that was a woman and a child. Crisis, the UK's national charity for homeless people, immediately issueda statement of condemnation. “It is a scandal that anyone should sleep on the streets in 21st centuryBritain. Yet over the last three years rough sleeping has risen steeply acrossthe country and by a massive 75% in London. Behind these numbers are realpeople struggling with a lack of housing, cuts to benefits and cuts tohomelessness services to help them rebuild their lives,” said Katharine Sacks-Jones, head of policy and campaignsat Crisis. “They deserve better than to be moved on to the next doorway along thestreet. We will never tackle rough sleeping with studs in the pavement. Insteadwe must deal with the causes,”Sacks-Jones added. Local Londoners went to investigate and confirm theinstallation of spikes on Southwark Bridge Road. What is ironic is that part ofthe building where metal needles were installed is the office of the BritishSchool of Osteopathy – an alternative medicine school focused on healingthrough moving, stretching and massaging a person’s muscles and joints. Many upset people compared the metal studs to spikes used to stop pigeonslanding on buildings. In response to the Twitter campaign, Shelter, a non-profit organization,is advising people to contact them if they have no place to sleep.

哦,貌似伦敦市长看到这个报道之后 面子挂不住了。 命令将这些 “ugly, stupid” 的尖形物拆除掉。但是搞点面子工程就能解决问题了吗?

London Mayor Johnson calls for 'ugly, stupid anti-homeless' spikes to be removed                                                                           Published time: June 10, 2014 02:51

London Mayor Boris Johnson distanced himself on Monday from the installation of metal spikes designed to prevent homeless from sleeping at a luxury building in central London. The “anti-homeless spikes” have prompted wide condemnation on social media.

An anonymous resident of the residential complex told theTelegraph, that “there was a homeless manasleep there about six weeks ago. ‘Then about two weeks ago allof a sudden studs were put up outside. I presume it is to deterhomeless people from sleeping there.”
Now top city politicians have joined the chorus against thespikes.
London Mayor Boris Johnson’s office called on the building’s managers to remove thespikes immediately.
"The Mayor believes these spikes are ugly, self-defeating andstupid,” a spokesperson for Johnson said. “Southwark Council are investigating, which is the right thing to do, but the Mayor is clear, thedeveloper should see sense and remove the spikes immediately. There are far better ways to tackle rough sleeping on London'sstreets. The Mayor has invested over ?34million in schemes totackle the issue, like No Second Night Out, resulting inthree-quarters of rough sleepers only spending one night on thestreets. He will continue to work alongside the government, boroughs and key agencies to reach people in need ofsupport.”
One of the residents also decried the spikes, saying it was notthe right way to deal with the problem.
"It's almost obscene, I was really offended when I saw itmyself. It's sending an awful message to homeless people,"the local resident told RT correspondent Sara Firth.
Southwark Council said the installation of the spikes was acounterproductive move in combatting homelessness.
"Southwark Council is not involved with the installation ofthe studs outside of the property at 118 Southwark Bridge Roadand we do not feel this is the best way to deal with theproblem,” said CouncillerPeter John, leader of Southwark Council.
"The studs were not part of the original planning applicationfor the building but would be considered too small to come underplanning enforcement, however we will continue to see if there isanything within the council's power to get these measures removedor an alternative solution found."
Meanwhile, a petition was opened online to protest the“controversial and inhumane way of 'managing' London'shomeless population.” The petition calls on the propertymanager Property Partners and Mayor Johnson to remove the spikes.
“We should be offering practical and emotional support tohelp the most vulnerable to get back on their feet,” thepetition’s author wrote. “We should not be sending them the message thatthey are pests that need to be warded off.”
RT’s Sara Firth captured these images on Monday of the sceneoutside the Southwark building. Protest banners were left bythose in opposition to the spikes, she said. One sign calls for aTuesday demonstration outside the building.
