There’s a secret place along a beaten path somewhere in California gold country where the faded thrills of a former era have flared up again in a mysterious way.


A couple walking their dog unearthed a stash of buried treasure, 1,427 U.S. gold coins minted during the mid- to late-19th century, that could be worth as much as $10 million.


You might say they struck the motherlode, more than a century and a half since the end of the gold rush.


“I don’t like to say once in a lifetime for anything, but you don’t get an opportunity to handle this kind of material, a treasure like this, ever,” Don Kagin, a longtime numismatist who is representing the couple, told The Associated Press.


“It’s like they found the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.”
