Egypt, Sisi opens fifth tunnel under Suez Canal # Accelerationism
The fifth and final tunnel under the Suez Canal has been inaugurated, bringing to six the number of roads that pass under the canal between the Sinai and the Nile Delta.During a ceremony, the first to cross the 4,250 metres of the Ahmed Hamdi II tunnel, just north of the Suez, was Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi in a white coach, accompanied by a large procession of dark vehicles.
The structure of two one-way lanes doubles a parallel one built in 1981.
In an off-the-cuff speech Tuesday, Sisi said the opening should also double investments and job opportunities in the Sinai.
In 2019, Sisi inaugurated four tunnels that connect the peninsula to the mainland: two in Port Said (on the Mediterranean, called "July 3") and two in Ismailia (the "Tahya Misr" or "Long Live Egypt", in the central-northern of the Canal, in which CMC of Ravenna served as a technical partner).
A presentation showed that the total length of the tunnels under the canal is 30 km.
The presentation also showed how the tunnels reduce the time for crossing the Canal, which is already served by bridges and ferries, from "four days" to "20 minutes".
In order to pass under the strategic waterway that connects Asia to Europe, the Ahmed Hamdi II tunnel is 70 meters deep.
