“卡彭特兄妹”是来自美国康涅狄格州纽黑文市的一支兄妹二重唱组合。哥哥理查德（Richard Carpenter,生于1946年10月15日，健盘手兼歌手）和妹妹卡伦（Karen Carpenter，生于1950年3月2日，歌手兼鼓手）。60年代末他们迁往加利福尼亚州在一个名叫“光谱”（Spectrum）的6人演唱组中一起演唱，70年代，该演唱组推出了多首风靡世界的单曲和唱片其中包括《与爱情告别》（Goodbye to Love,1972）和《世界之巅》（Top of the World,1973）等。1971年为影片《情人和别的陌生人》主唱的《我们所知道的一切》获得了第四十三届奥斯卡最佳电影歌曲奖。1975年因精神和身体过度劳累而病倒，从此一蹶不振，演唱远不如往日成功。1981至1982年曾患厌食症，痊愈后决定重返歌坛。但不幸于1983年2月死于心肌梗塞，终年仅三十二岁。

　　一提到The Carpenters大家一定会想起他们的《Yesterday Once More》、《Close to You》等，这对兄妹组合无疑是七十年代最成功的流行音乐组合之一，他们在八十年代初结束演艺生涯前创作了无数好歌。虽然最先显现音乐天才的是哥哥Richard，可是妹妹Karen那近乎完美和极富感情的嗓音却更深地印刻在我们的心里。

　　整个70年代后期，他们已开始走下坡路。身体欠佳对卡朋特兄妹的打击更是雪上加霜：理查德不幸染上了“药瘾”为了戒瘾，他在1978年进入了一家诊所接受治疗；卡伦则因为节食而患上了厌食症。1983年2月4日，人们发现卡伦晕倒在她父母的房间里。当天，卡伦因厌食引起生物功能紊乱导致心脏病发作，在医院里告别人世。

　　《Top of The World》由Karen Carpenter演唱。Karen去世后，有人根据她的生平拍成一部《The story of Karen Carpenter》。影片里，她是正在唱《Top of The World》这首歌时，因体力不支，身体太虚弱，突然晕倒在舞台上。后被送往医院抢救，终因长时间患“神经性厌食症”，最终没能够挽救她年轻的生命。《Top of The World》成了卡伦的绝唱。
