Coolant.

Gas Line Antifreeze.

Do you need gas line antifreeze? It depends on whom you ask. Walk into your neighborhood auto parts store and the salesperson will show you a wide array of products that he may contend are going to help whatever ails your engine. Ask friends or other auto experts and you will get different answers about the effectiveness of gas line antifreeze. You need to understand what it is, how it works, and why you might need it. There are several different products to choose from if you decide to buy gas line antifreeze.

What is Gas Line Antifreeze? The purpose of gas line antifreeze is to prevent frozen gas lines and keep your car's carburetor from icing. Makers of the product say it aids in quick starting and eliminates moisture in gasoline and diesel fuel. Gas line antifreeze contains one of two types of alcohol, methanol or isopropyl. Isopropyl is manufactured chemically, while methanol is an organic alcohol. Methanol is known to provide more octane and help fuel burn more cleanly when added to gasoline.

Do You Need Gas Line Antifreeze? The answer to this question most of the time is "No." Today's gasolines contain 10 percent ethanol, which acts as a gas line antifreeze just like the additives. But there are circumstances where using gas line antifreeze can help. If you get water in your gas tank in an unexpected manner, gas line antifreeze can sometimes fix the problem. This can occur when you leave the gas cap off or open during a rainstorm. There are also instances where water gets into your fuel tank at the gas station. This is rare, but there are times when the gasoline itself is corrupted. Gas line antifreeze is also used in extremely cold climates as a preventive measure.

How to Use Gas Line Antifreeze Most manufacturers of gas line antifreeze recommend one bottle per tank of gas. Bottles are generally around 12 ounces in size. The gas line antifreeze can be poured into the tank before or after you fill up. Just pour the bottle of gas line antifreeze directly into the tank where you pump your gas. It is not recommended that you use more than one bottle per tank. Using too much gas line antifreeze can cause corrosion inside the gas tank in cases of extreme overuse. Using Gas Line Antifreeze on Frozen Fuel Lines What if you are sure your gas line is already frozen? Will gas line antifreeze help? The answer is "Maybe." It depends on where inside the fuel tank the gas line is frozen. Try adding a bottle of gas line antifreeze to your fuel tank and wait 15 to 20 minutes for it to work its way through the frozen line. If your car still doesn't start, do not continue adding additional amounts of gas line antifreeze. Waiting for the temperature to warm up or having your vehicle taken to a mechanic may be your only options. Buying Gas Line Antifreeze The good news is that trying gas line antifreeze isn't going to cost you a bundle and they all contain basically the same ingredients. Your local auto parts store will have products selling for anywhere from just over $1 up to $4 per bottle. A bottle of two of the most popular brands, Pyroil or Heet, will cost around $2 per bottle. You can also purchase a slightly more expensive product that includes multiple additives such as Heet Fuel Line Antifreeze, Water Remover and Fuel Injector Cleaner.

Gas line antifreeze isn't expensive, so it's worth a try as a preventive measure in extremely cold or wet conditions. It's also worth giving it a shot if you do end up with a frozen gas line or water in your fuel system. Today's gasolines already contain the same types of additives that gas line antifreeze products do. So it's not necessary to use gas line antifreeze on a regular basis or every time you fill up. It won't hurt, however, to try using a gas line antifreeze product in your vehicle to see if it works for you.

EDITOR'S TIP:Using gas line antifreeze can help keep your fuel lines flowing, but that's not the only way. Keeping your fuel tank at least half-full during extremely cold weather is one simple way to avoid fuel line freeze up. The more gas that's in your tank, the longer it takes for it to freeze. Another way is to ensure that your gas cap and the cover over it aren't defective. A defective gas cap and cover can allow water to seep into your fuel tank and cause the fuel line freeze up.
