旧金山的唐人街是北美最大的唐人街，历史最悠久，更是亚洲之外最大的华人社区。
虽然旧金山最壮观的联合广场以及西部金融的中心金融区就位于唐人街旁，
但是在唐人街内，所见的招牌都是用汉字写的，听到的也都是汉语，而非英语。
这是一个与众不同的地方，完全是一个城中之国，异国情调十足。

旧金山唐人街的历史充满了悲剧的色彩，
19世纪末时，中国移民像「卖猪仔」似的被运来加州修筑太平洋铁路和淘金，
对当地的经济建设作出了巨大的贡献。
但他们却与意裔移民、黑人、穷白人、水手一块儿被当时的政府视为「次等公民」，
并规定他们居住在特定区域内以免「污染」其它地方。
他们只好在以都板街(Grant Ave.)为中心的小范围内活动，
后来这里又迁入了新的移民，发展至今便成了现在的「唐人街」，
也是亚洲之外最大的华人社区。

唐人街共占有16条街口，有10万华裔居民，
最好的游览方式是由都板街和Bust 街交会的「天下为公」牌楼进入。
旧金山的唐人街除了有海外唐人街必不可少的杂货店与餐馆云集以外， 更具有浓郁的中国特色。
都板街是社区内主要的街道，密布着商店、餐馆，绚丽的门面吸引着游客和市民。
